This causes a couple of test failures when the host glibc does not support DT_RELR. The not correct, but simple, workaround is to build without DT_RELR as this library is otherwise likely to load on glibc 2.17 and newer today. This allows tst-pthread-gdb-attach{,-static} to continue working when testing on a gdb loaded with an older glibc. This avoids a failure in tst-pthread-gdb-attach similar to: Trying host libthread_db library: .../build/glibc/nptl_db/libthread_db.so.1. dlopen failed: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR' not found (required by .../build/glibc/nptl_db/libthread_db.so.1). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012 in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect reality in those cases. Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by, etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a courtesy to the earlier developers. The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. The libpthread placeholder symbols need some changes because some symbol versions have gone away completely. But __errno_location@@GLIBC_2.0 still exists, so the GLIBC_2.0 version is still there. The internal __pthread_create symbol now points to the correct function, so the sysdeps/nptl/thrd_create.c override is no longer necessary. There was an issue how the hidden alias of pthread_getattr_default_np was defined, so this commit cleans up that aspects and removes the GLIBC_PRIVATE export altogether. The new test does not reproduce bug 27744 with --disable-hardcoded-path-in-tests, but is still a valid smoke test. With --enable-hardcoded-path-in-tests, it is necessary to avoid add-symbol-file because this can tickle a GDB bug. It then occurred to me that the remaining declarations in libc-internal.h are mostly to do with early initialization, and probably most of the files including it, even in the core code, don't need it anymore. Indeed, only 19 files actually need what remains of libc-internal.h. 23 others need libc-diag.h instead, and 12 need libc-pointer-arith.h instead. No file needs more than one of them, and 16 don't need any of them! Current usage is mainly used a performance optimization to avoid the syscall, however it adds some issues: - The exposed clone syscall will try to set pid/tid to make the new thread somewhat compatible with current GLIBC assumptions. This cause a set of issue with new workloads and usecases (such as BZ#17214 and [1]) as well for new internal usage of clone to optimize other algorithms (such as clone plus CLONE_VM for posix_spawn, BZ#19957). - The caching complexity also added some bugs in the past [2] [3] and requires more effort of each port to handle such requirements (for both clone and vfork implementation). - Caching performance gain in mainly on getpid and some specific code paths. The getpid performance leverage is questionable [4], either by the idea of getpid being a hotspot as for the getpid implementation itself (if it is indeed a justifiable hotspot a vDSO symbol could let to a much more simpler solution). Other usage is mainly for non usual code paths, such as pthread cancellation signal and handling. For thread creation (on stack allocation) the code simplification in fact adds some performance gain due the no need of transverse the stack cache and invalidate each element pid. Other thread usages will require a direct getpid syscall, such as cancellation/setxid signal, thread cancellation, thread fail path (at create_thread), and thread signal (pthread_kill and pthread_sigqueue). However these are hardly usual hotspots and I think adding a syscall is justifiable. It also simplifies both the clone and vfork arch-specific implementation. And by review each fork implementation there are some discrepancies that this patch also solves: - microblaze clone/vfork does not set/reset the pid/tid field - hppa uses the default vfork implementation that fallback to fork. Since vfork is deprecated I do not think we should bother with it. The patch also removes the TID caching in clone. My understanding for such semantic is try provide some pthread usage after a user program issue clone directly (as done by thread creation with CLONE_PARENT_SETTID and pthread tid member). However, as stated before in multiple discussions threads, GLIBC provides clone syscalls without further supporting all this semantics. I ran a full make check on x86_64, x32, i686, armhf, aarch64, and powerpc64le. For sparc32, sparc64, and mips I ran the basic fork and vfork tests from posix/ folder (on a qemu system). So it would require further testing on alpha, hppa, ia64, m68k, nios2, s390, sh, and tile (I excluded microblaze because it is already implementing the patch semantic regarding clone/vfork). Following my other recent such patches, this one deals with the case of function definitions in files that either contain assertions or where grep suggested they might contain assertions - and thus where it isn't possible to use a simple object code comparison as a sanity check on the correctness of the patch, because line numbers are changed. A few such automatically-generated changes needed to be supplemented by manual changes for the result to compile. openat64 had a prototype declaration with "..." but an old-style definition in sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/dl-openat64.c, and "..." needed adding to the generated prototype in the definition (I've filed <https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=68024> for diagnosing such cases in GCC; the old state was undefined behavior not requiring a diagnostic, but one seems a good idea). In addition, as Florian has noted regparm attribute mismatches between declaration and definition are only diagnosed for prototype definitions, and five functions needed internal_function added to their definitions (in the case of __pthread_mutex_cond_lock, via the macro definition of __pthread_mutex_lock) to compile on i386. After this patch is in, remaining old-style definitions are probably most readily fixed manually before we can turn on -Wold-style-definition for all builds. Special host_os handling in configure.ac that was purely for shlib-versions is removed. In order to generate overall summaries of the results of all tests in the glibc testsuite, we need to identify and concatenate the files with the results of individual tests. Tomas Dohnalek's patch used $(common-objpfx)*/*.test-result for this. However, the normal glibc approach is explicit enumeration of the expected set of files with a given property, rather than all files matching some pattern like that. Furthermore, we would like to be able to mark tests as UNRESOLVED if the file with their results is for some reason missing, and in future we would like to be able to mark tests as UNSUPPORTED if they are disabled for a particular configuration (rather than simply having them missing from the list of tests as at present). Such handling of tests that were not run or did not record results requires an explicit enumeration of tests. For the tests following the default makefile rules, $(tests) (and $(xtests)) provides such an enumeration. Others, however, are added directly as dependencies of the "tests" and "xtests" makefile targets. This patch changes the makefiles to put them in variables tests-special and xtests-special, with appropriate dependencies on the tests listed there then being added centrally. Those variables are used in Rules and so need to be set before Rules is included in a subdirectory makefile, which is often earlier in the makefile than the dependencies were present before. We previously discussed the question of where to include Rules; see the question at <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-11/msg00798.html>, and a discussion in <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2013-01/msg00337.html> of why Rules is included early rather than late in subdirectory makefiles. It was necessary to avoid an indirection through the check-abi target and get the check-abi-* targets for individual libraries into the tests-special variable. The intl/ test $(objpfx)tst-gettext.out, previously built only because of dependencies from other tests, was also added to tests-special for the same reason. The entries in tests-special are the full makefile targets, complete with $(objpfx) and .out. If a future change causes tests to be named consistently with a .out suffix, this can be changed to include just the path relative to $(objpfx), without .out. No-one commented on the general question there of whether Makeconfig should always be included immediately after the definition of subdir. This patch implements that early inclusion of Makeconfig in each directory (which is a lot easier than consistent placement of includes of Rules). Includes are added if needed, or moved up if already present. Subdirectory "all:" targets are removed, since Makeconfig provides one. There is potential for further cleanups I haven't done. Rules and Makerules have code such as ifneq "$(findstring env,$(origin headers))" "" headers := endif to override to empty any value of various variables that came from the environment. I think there is a case for Makeconfig setting all the subdirectory variables (other than subdir) to empty to ensure no outside value is going to take effect if a subdirectory fails to define a variable. (A list of such variables, possibly out of date and incomplete, is in manual/maint.texi.) Rules and Makerules would give errors if Makeconfig hadn't already been included, instead of including it themselves. The special code to override values coming from the environment would then be obsolete and could be removed.
