* elf: Add a way to check if tunable is set (BZ 27069)Adhemerval Zanella2023-11-291-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | The patch adds two new macros, TUNABLE_GET_DEFAULT and TUNABLE_IS_INITIALIZED, here the former get the default value with a signature similar to TUNABLE_GET, while the later returns whether the tunable was set by the environment variable. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu. Reviewed-by: DJ Delorie <dj@redhat.com> Tested-by: Zhangfei Gao <zhangfei.gao@linaro.org>
* elf: Rework exception handling in the dynamic loader [BZ #25486]Florian Weimer2022-11-031-7/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The old exception handling implementation used function interposition to replace the dynamic loader implementation (no TLS support) with the libc implementation (TLS support). This results in problems if the link order between the dynamic loader and libc is reversed (bug 25486). The new implementation moves the entire implementation of the exception handling functions back into the dynamic loader, using THREAD_GETMEM and THREAD_SETMEM for thread-local data support. These depends on Hurd support for these macros, added in commit b65a82e4e757c1e6cb7073916 ("hurd: Add THREAD_GET/SETMEM/_NC"). One small obstacle is that the exception handling facilities are used before the TCB has been set up, so a check is needed if the TCB is available. If not, a regular global variable is used to store the exception handling information. Also rename dl-error.c to dl-catch.c, to avoid confusion with the dlerror function. * Revert "Detect ld.so and libc.so version inconsistency during startup"Florian Weimer2022-08-251-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This reverts commit 6f85dbf102ad7982409ba0fe96886caeb6389fef. Once this change hits the release branches, it will require relinking of all statically linked applications before static dlopen works again, for the majority of updates on release branches: The NEWS file is regularly updated with bug references, so the __libc_early_init suffix changes, and static dlopen cannot find the function anymore. While this ABI check is still technically correct (we do require rebuilding & relinking after glibc updates to keep static dlopen working), it is too drastic for stable release branches. * Detect ld.so and libc.so version inconsistency during startupFlorian Weimer2022-08-241-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The files NEWS, include/link.h, and sysdeps/generic/ldsodefs.h contribute to the version fingerprint used for detection. The fingerprint can be further refined using the --with-extra-version-id configure argument. _dl_call_libc_early_init is replaced with _dl_lookup_libc_early_init. The new function is used store a pointer to libc.so's __libc_early_init function in the libc_map_early_init member of the ld.so namespace structure. This function pointer can then be called directly, so the separate invocation function is no longer needed. The versioned symbol lookup needs the symbol versioning data structures, so the initialization of libc_map and libc_map_early_init is now done from _dl_check_map_versions, after this information becomes available. (_dl_map_object_from_fd does not set this up in time, so the initialization code had to be moved from there.) This means that the separate initialization code can be removed from dl_main because _dl_check_map_versions covers all maps, including the initial executable loaded by the kernel. The lookup still happens before relocation and the invocation of IFUNC resolvers, so IFUNC resolvers are protected from ABI mismatch. The __libc_early_init function pointer is not protected because so little code runs between the pointer write and the invocation (only dynamic linker code and IFUNC resolvers). * Add GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR for DT_RELR supportH.J. Lu2022-04-261-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The EI_ABIVERSION field of the ELF header in executables and shared libraries can be bumped to indicate the minimum ABI requirement on the dynamic linker. However, EI_ABIVERSION in executables isn't checked by the Linux kernel ELF loader nor the existing dynamic linker. Executables will crash mysteriously if the dynamic linker doesn't support the ABI features required by the EI_ABIVERSION field. The dynamic linker should be changed to check EI_ABIVERSION in executables. Add a glibc version, GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR, to indicate DT_RELR support so that the existing dynamic linkers will issue an error on executables with GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR dependency. When there is a DT_VERNEED entry with libc.so on DT_NEEDED, issue an error if there is a DT_RELR entry without GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR dependency. Support __placeholder_only_for_empty_version_map as the placeholder symbol used only for empty version map to generate GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR without any symbols.
* Fix glibc 2.34 ABI omission (missing GLIBC_2.34 in dynamic loader)Florian Weimer2022-01-271-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The glibc 2.34 release really should have added a GLIBC_2.34 symbol to the dynamic loader. With it, we could move functions such as dlopen or pthread_key_create that work on process-global state into the dynamic loader (once we have fixed a longstanding issue with static linking). Without the GLIBC_2.34 symbol, yet another new symbol version would be needed because old glibc will fail to load binaries due to the missing symbol version in ld.so that newly linked programs will require. * elf: Add _dl_find_object functionFlorian Weimer2021-12-281-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It can be used to speed up the libgcc unwinder, and the internal _dl_find_dso_for_object function (which is used for caller identification in dlopen and related functions, and in dladdr). _dl_find_object is in the internal namespace due to bug 28503. If libgcc switches to _dl_find_object, this namespace issue will be fixed. It is located in libc for two reasons: it is necessary to forward the call to the static libc after static dlopen, and there is a link ordering issue with -static-libgcc and libgcc_eh.a because libc.so is not a linker script that includes ld.so in the glibc build tree (so that GCC's internal -lc after libgcc_eh.a does not pick up ld.so). It is necessary to do the i386 customization in the sysdeps/x86/bits/dl_find_object.h header shared with x86-64 because otherwise, multilib installations are broken. The implementation uses software transactional memory, as suggested by Torvald Riegel. Two copies of the supporting data structures are used, also achieving full async-signal-safety. * dlfcn: Rework static dlopen hooksFlorian Weimer2021-06-031-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Consolidate all hooks structures into a single one. There are no static dlopen ABI concerns because glibc 2.34 already comes with substantial ABI-incompatible changes in this area. (Static dlopen requires the exact same dynamic glibc version that was used for static linking.) The new approach uses a pointer to the hooks structure into _rtld_global_ro and initalizes it in __rtld_static_init. This avoids a back-and-forth with various callback functions. * elf: Turn _dl_printf, _dl_error_printf, _dl_fatal_printf into functionsFlorian Weimer2020-05-251-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This change makes it easier to set a breakpoint on these calls. This also addresses the issue that including <ldsodefs.h> without <unistd.h> does not result usable _dl_*printf macros because of the use of the STD*_FILENO macros there. (The private symbol for _dl_fatal_printf will go away again once the exception handling implementation is unified between libc and ld.so.) * elf: Implement __libc_early_initFlorian Weimer2020-04-241-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This function is defined in libc.so, and the dynamic loader calls right after relocation has been finished, before any ELF constructors or the preinit function is invoked. It is also used in the static build for initializing parts of the static libc. To locate __libc_early_init, a direct symbol lookup function is used, _dl_lookup_direct. It does not search the entire symbol scope and consults merely a single link map. This function could also be used to implement lookups in the vDSO (as an optimization). A per-namespace variable (libc_map) is added for locating libc.so, to avoid repeated traversals of the search scope. It is similar to GL(dl_initfirst). An alternative would have been to thread a context argument from _dl_open down to _dl_map_object_from_fd (where libc.so is identified). This could have avoided the global variable, but the change would be larger as a result. It would not have been possible to use this to replace GL(dl_initfirst) because that global variable is used to pass the function pointer past the stack switch from dl_main to the main program. Replacing that requires adding a new argument to _dl_init, which in turn needs changes to the architecture-specific libc.so startup code written in assembler. __libc_early_init should not be used to replace _dl_var_init (as it exists today on some architectures). Instead, _dl_lookup_direct should be used to look up a new variable symbol in libc.so, and that should then be initialized from the dynamic loader, immediately after the object has been loaded in _dl_map_object_from_fd (before relocation is run). This way, more IFUNC resolvers which depend on these variables will work. Reviewed-by: Carlos O'Donell <carlos@redhat.com>
* ld.so: Do not export free/calloc/malloc/realloc functions [BZ #25486]Florian Weimer2020-02-151-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Exporting functions and relying on symbol interposition from libc.so makes the choice of implementation dependent on DT_NEEDED order, which is not what some compiler drivers expect. This commit replaces one magic mechanism (symbol interposition) with another one (preprocessor-/compiler-based redirection). This makes the hand-over from the minimal malloc to the full malloc more explicit. Removing the ABI symbols is backwards-compatible because libc.so is always in scope, and the dynamic loader will find the malloc-related symbols there since commit f0b2132b35248c1f4a80f62a2c38cddcc802aa8c ("ld.so: Support moving versioned symbols between sonames [BZ #24741]"). * elf: Support dlvsym within libc.soFlorian Weimer2018-01-041-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | This commit adds a new _dl_open_hook entry for dlvsym and implements the function using the existing dl_lookup_symbol_x function supplied by the dynamic loader. A new hook variable, _dl_open_hook2, is introduced, which should make this change suitable for backporting: For old statically linked binaries, __libc_dlvsym will always return NULL.

* tunables: Clean up hooks to get and set tunablesSiddhesh Poyarekar2017-06-071-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The TUNABLE_SET_VALUE and family of macros (and my later attempt to add a TUNABLE_GET) never quite went together very well because the overall interface was not clearly defined. This patch is an attempt to do just that. This patch consolidates the API to two simple sets of macros, TUNABLE_GET* and TUNABLE_SET*. If TUNABLE_NAMESPACE is defined, TUNABLE_GET takes just the tunable name, type and a (optionally NULL) callback function to get the value of the tunable. The callback function, if non-NULL, is called if the tunable was externally set (i.e. via GLIBC_TUNABLES or any future mechanism). For example: val = TUNABLE_GET (check, int32_t, check_callback) returns the value of the glibc.malloc.check tunable (assuming TUNABLE_NAMESPACE is set to malloc) as an int32_t into VAL after calling check_callback. Likewise, TUNABLE_SET can be used to set the value of the tunable, although this is currently possible only in the dynamic linker before it relocates itself. For example: TUNABLE_SET (check, int32_t, 2) will set glibc.malloc.check to 2. Of course, this is not possible since we set (or read) glibc.malloc.check long after it is relocated. To access or set a tunable outside of TUNABLE_NAMESPACE, use the TUNABLE_GET_FULL and TUNABLE_SET_FULL macros, which have the following prototype: TUNABLE_GET_FULL (glibc, tune, hwcap_mask, uint64_t, NULL) TUNABLE_SET_FULL (glibc, tune, hwcap_mask, uint64_t, 0xffff) In future the tunable list may get split into mutable and immutable tunables where mutable tunables can be modified by the library and userspace after relocation as well and TUNABLE_SET will be more useful than it currently is. However whenever we actually do that split, we will have to ensure that the mutable tunables are protected with locks. * elf/Versions (__tunable_set_val): Rename to __tunable_get_val. * elf/dl-tunables.c: Likewise. Tunables support can be enabled by passing the --enable-tunables configure flag to the configure script. * Implement _dl_catch_error, _dl_signal_error in libc.so [BZ #16628]Florian Weimer2016-11-301-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This change moves the main implementation of _dl_catch_error, _dl_signal_error to libc.so, where TLS variables can be used directly. This removes a writable function pointer from the rtld_global variable. For use during initial relocation, minimal implementations of these functions are provided in ld.so. These are eventually interposed by the libc.so implementations. This is implemented by compiling elf/dl-error-skeleton.c twice, via elf/dl-error.c and elf/dl-error-minimal.c. As a side effect of this change, the static version of dl-error.c no longer includes support for the _dl_signal_cerror/_dl_receive_error mechanism because it is only used in ld.so.
