There are two flags currently defined: SCANF_LDBL_IS_DBL is the mode
used by __nldbl_ scanf variants, and SCANF_ISOC99_A is the mode used
by __isoc99_ scanf variants. In this patch, the new functions honor
these flag bits if they're set, but they still also look at the
corresponding bits of environmental state, and callers all pass zero.
The new functions do *not* have the "errp" argument possessed by
_IO_vfscanf and _IO_vfwscanf. All internal callers passed NULL for
that argument. External callers could theoretically exist, so I
preserved wrappers, but they are flagged as compat symbols and they
don't preserve the three-way distinction among types of errors that
was formerly exposed. These functions probably should have been in
the list of deprecated _IO_ symbols in 2.27 NEWS -- they're not just
aliases for vfscanf and vfwscanf.
(It was necessary to introduce ldbl_compat_symbol for _IO_vfscanf.
Please check that part of the patch very carefully, I am still not
confident I understand all of the details of ldbl-opt.)
This patch also introduces helper inlines in libio/strfile.h that
encapsulate the process of initializing an _IO_strfile object for
reading. This allows us to call __vfscanf_internal directly from
sscanf, and __vfwscanf_internal directly from swscanf, without
duplicating the initialization code. (Previously, they called their
v-counterparts, but that won't work if we want to control *both* C99
mode and ldbl-is-dbl mode using the flags argument to__vfscanf_internal.)
It's still a little awkward, especially for wide strfiles, but it's
much better than what we had.
Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le.

glibc does:
/* There should be no difference between the UTF-32 handling required
by c32rtomb and the wchar_t handling which has long since been
implemented in wcrtomb. */
weak_alias (__wcrtomb, c32rtomb)
/* There should be no difference between the UTF-32 handling required
by mbrtoc32 and the wchar_t handling which has long since been
implemented in mbrtowc. */
weak_alias (__mbrtowc, mbrtoc32)
The reasoning in those comments to justify those aliases is incorrect:
ISO C requires that, for the case of a NULL mbstate_t* being passed,
each function has its *own* internal static mbstate_t. Thus a program
must be able to use both wcrtomb and c32rtomb at the same time with
each keeping its own separate state, and likewise for mbrtowc and
mbrtoc32.
This patch duly sets up separarate char32_t function that wrap the
wchar_t ones. Note that the included test only covers the mbrtoc32 /
mbrtowc pair. While I think the change made is logically correct for
c32rtomb / wcrtomb as well, I'm not sure we have a locale with a
suitable state-dependent multibyte encoding for testing that part of
the change.
Tested for x86_64.

The c16rtomb implementation has:
// XXX The ISO C 11 spec I have does not say anything about handling
// XXX surrogates in this interface.
The DR#488 resolution, as applied to C2X, requires surrogate pairs to
be handled here (so the first call returns 0 and stores the high
surrogate in the mbstate_t, while the second call combines the
surrogates, produces a multibyte character and returns the number of
bytes written). This patch implements that. (mbrtoc16 already
handled producing surrogates as output.)

C99 specifies that the EOF condition on a file is "sticky": once EOF
has been encountered, all subsequent reads should continue to return
EOF until the file is closed or something clears the "end-of-file
indicator" (e.g. fseek, clearerr). This is arguably a change from
C89, where the wording was ambiguous; the BSDs always had sticky EOF,
but the System V lineage would attempt to read from the underlying fd
again. GNU libc has followed System V for as long as we've been
using libio, but nowadays C99 conformance and BSD compatibility are
more important than System V compatibility.
You might wonder if changing the _underflow impls is sufficient to
apply the C99 semantics to all of the many stdio functions that
perform input. It should be enough to cover all paths to _IO_SYSREAD,
and the only other functions that call _IO_SYSREAD are the _seekoff
impls, which is OK because seeking clears EOF, and the _xsgetn impls,
which, as far as I can tell, are unused within glibc.
The test programs in this patch use a pseudoterminal to set up the
necessary conditions. To facilitate this I added a new test-support
function that sets up a pair of pty file descriptors for you; it's
almost the same as BSD openpty, the only differences are that it
allocates the optionally-returned tty pathname with malloc, and that
it crashes if anything goes wrong.

This patch mechanically removes all remaining uses, and the
definitions, of the following libio name aliases:
name replaced with
---- -------------
_IO_FILE FILE
_IO_fpos_t __fpos_t
_IO_fpos64_t __fpos64_t
_IO_size_t size_t
_IO_ssize_t ssize_t or __ssize_t
_IO_off_t off_t
_IO_off64_t off64_t
_IO_pid_t pid_t
_IO_uid_t uid_t
_IO_wint_t wint_t
_IO_va_list va_list or __gnuc_va_list
_IO_BUFSIZ BUFSIZ
_IO_cookie_io_functions_t cookie_io_functions_t
__io_read_fn cookie_read_function_t
__io_write_fn cookie_write_function_t
__io_seek_fn cookie_seek_function_t
__io_close_fn cookie_close_function_t
I used __fpos_t and __fpos64_t instead of fpos_t and fpos64_t because
the definitions of fpos_t and fpos64_t depend on the largefile mode.
I used __ssize_t and __gnuc_va_list in a handful of headers where
namespace cleanliness might be relevant even though they're
internal-use-only. In all other cases, I used the public-namespace
name.
There are a tiny handful of places where I left a use of 'struct _IO_FILE'
alone, because it was being used together with 'struct _IO_FILE_plus'
or 'struct _IO_FILE_complete' in the same arithmetic expression.
Because this patch was almost entirely done with search and replace, I
may have introduced indentation botches. I did proofread the diff,
but I may have missed something.
The ChangeLog below calls out all of the places where this was not a
pure search-and-replace change.
Installed stripped libraries and executables are unchanged by this patch,

(bug 17979).
As noted in bug 17979 (and as I noted earlier in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-02/msg00647.html>), uchar.h
has gratuitously complicated code to determine the types for char16_t
and char32_t, and to reject including that header for pre-C11
compilers not defining __CHAR16_TYPE__ and __CHAR32_TYPE__. Since
those types are always required to match uint_least16_t and
uint_least32_t, which glibc knows how to define without reference to
such predefined macros, it's safe just to define those types the same
as the *least* types are defined in stdint.h, so allowing the header
to work with (for example) GCC 4.3.
This patch implements that. bits/types.h is made to define
__int_leastN_t and __uint_leastN_t so the logic for those types can
stay in a single place, and stdint.h is made to use those __*_t to
define the public *_t types. uchar.h is then made to use
__uint_least16_t and __uint_least32_t to define char16_t and char32_t,
so simplifying the logic there. A new test is added that verifies the
types chosen for char16_t and char32_t do indeed match the types the
compiler uses for u"" and U"" string literals.
Tested for x86_64. (I have not tested with any of the older compilers
for which this would actually make a difference to whether you can
include uchar.h.)

This patch concludes filling out TS 18661-3 support for different
types by adding *f32 function aliases of float functions to support
_Float32. As with _Float64 and _Float32x, this is supported for all
glibc configurations. As with the previous such patches there are
some x86 ulps updates because of inline functions present for float
but not for _Float32. The patch also has the usual
bits/floatn-common.h update, symbol versions, ABI baselines updates,
test enablement and documentation.
Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py, with both
GCC 6 and GCC 7.

This patch continues filling out TS 18661-3 support by adding *f64 and
*f32x function aliases, supporting _Float64 and _Float32x, as aliases
for double functions. These types are supported for all glibc
configurations. The API corresponds exactly to that for _Float128 and
_Float64x. _Float32 aliases to float functions remain to be added in
subsequent patches to complete this process (then there are a few
miscellaneous functions in TS 18661-3 to implement that aren't simply
versions of existing functions for new types).
The patch enables the feature in bits/floatn-common.h, adds symbol
versions and documentation with updates to ABI baselines, and arranges
for the libm functions for the new types to be tested. As with the
_Float64x changes there are some x86 ulps updates because of header
inlines not used for the new types (and one other change to the
non-multiarch libm-test-ulps, which I suppose comes from using a
different compiler version / configuration from when it was last
regenerated).
Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py, with both
GCC 6 and GCC 7.

This patch continues filling out TS 18661-3 support by adding *f64x
function aliases on platforms with _Float64x support. (It so happens
the set of such platforms is exactly the same as the set of platforms
with _Float128 support, although on x86_64, x86 and ia32 the _Float64x
format is Intel extended rather than binary128.) The API provided
corresponds exactly to that provided for _Float128, mostly coming from
TS 18661-3. As these functions always alias those for another type
(long double, _Float128 or both), __* function names are not provided,
as in other cases of alias types.
Given the preparation done in previous patches, this one just enables
the feature via Makeconfig and bits/floatn.h, adds symbol versions,
and updates documentation and ABI baselines. The symbol versions are
present unconditionally as GLIBC_2.27 in the relevant Versions files,
as it's OK for those to specify versions for functions that may not be
present in some configurations; no additional complexity is needed
unless in future some configuration gains support for this type that
didn't have such support in 2.27. The Makeconfig additions for ia64
and x86 aren't strictly needed, as those configurations also get
float64x-alias-fcts definitions from
sysdeps/ieee754/float128/Makeconfig, but still seem appropriate given
that _Float64x is not _Float128 for those configurations.
A libm-test-ulps update for x86 is included. This is because
bits/mathinline.h does not have _Float64x support added and for two
functions the use of out-of-line functions results in increased ulps
(ifloat64x shares ulps with ildouble / ifloat128 as appropriate).
Given that we'd like generally to eliminate bits/mathinline.h
optimizations, preferring to have such optimizations in GCC instead,
it seems reasonable not to add such support there for new types. GCC
support for _FloatN / _FloatNx built-in functions is limited, but has
been improved in GCC 8, and at some point I hope the full set of libm
built-in functions in GCC, and other optimizations with
per-floating-type aspects, will be enabled for all _FloatN / _FloatNx
types.
Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py, with both
GCC 6 and GCC 7.

<locale.h> is specified to define locale_t in POSIX.1-2008, and so are
all of the headers that define functions that take locale_t arguments.
Under _GNU_SOURCE, the additional headers that define such functions
have also always defined locale_t. Therefore, there is no need to use
__locale_t in public function prototypes, nor in any internal code.

xlocale.h is already a single-type micro-header, defining struct
__locale_struct and the typedefs __locale_t and locale_t. This patch
brings it into the bits/types/ scheme: there are now
bits/types/__locale_t.h which defines only __locale_struct and
__locale_t, and bits/types/locale_t.h which defines locale_t as well
as the other two. None of *our* headers need __locale_t.h, but it
appears to me that libstdc++ could make use of it.
There are a lot of external uses of xlocale.h, but all the uses I
checked had an autoconf test or equivalent for its existence. It has
never been available from other C libraries, and it has always
contained a comment reading "This file is not standardized, don't rely
on it, it can go away without warning" so I think dropping it is
pretty safe.
I also took the opportunity to clean up comments in various public
header files that still talk about the *_l interfaces as though they
were completely nonstandard. There are a few of them, notably the
strtoX_l and wcstoX_l families, that haven't been standardized, but

As noted in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-12/msg00240.html>,
stdlib/Versions and wcsmbs/Versions list some functions as
__strto*_internal and __wcsto*_internal rather than explicitly listing
the symbols to be exported (so any new internal function matching one
of those patterns would be wrongly added to version GLIBC_2.0), which
seems like a bad idea. This patch changes those files to list the
exported symbols explicitly. There are still entries in
sysdeps/nacl/Versions for __nacl_irt_*, but as GLIBC_PRIVATE symbols
that seems less significant.

glibc headers include some code (not particularly consistent or
systematic) to put various declarations in C++ namespaces std and
__c99, if _GLIBCPP_USE_NAMESPACES is defined.
As noted in <https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/libstdc++/2017-03/msg00025.html>,
this macro was removed from libstdc++ in 2000. I don't expect
compilation with such old versions of libstdc++ to work with current
glibc headers anyway (whereas old *binaries* are expected to stay
working with current glibc); this patch (which should be a no-op with
any libstdc++ version postdating that removal) removes all this code
from the glibc headers.
The begin-end-check.pl test, whose comments say it is about checking
these namespace macro calls, is also removed. The code in that test
would have covered __BEGIN_DECLS / __END_DECLS as well, but if those
weren't properly matched it would show up with the
check-installed-headers-cxx tests, so I don't think there is an actual
use for keeping begin-end-check.pl with the namespace code removed.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

Quite a few tests include libc-internal.h just for the DIAG_* macros.
Split those macros to their own file, which can be included safely in
_ISOMAC mode. I also moved ignore_value, since it seems logically

This patch fixes the glibc testsuite build for GCC 7
-Wformat-truncation, newly moved out of -Wformat-length and with some

This patch implements support for the __STDC_WANT_LIB_EXT2__ feature
test macro from ISO/IEC TR 24731-2:2010, thereby implementing one
possible approach for supporting ISO C feature test macros.
Recall that, as described in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-05/msg00486.html>, these
macros work based on the definition when affected headers are
included, so cannot be handled once when the first system header is
included because that might not be one of the headers the particular
macro in question affects.
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-05/msg00680.html> expresses
views on possible approaches for implementation and
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-06/msg00039.html> follows
up on that.
This patch arranges things so that the relevant condition is
__GLIBC_USE (LIB_EXT2), following one of the suggestions given.
Headers using these macros include <bits/libc-header-start.h>, which
in turn includes <features.h>. Headers must define
__GLIBC_INTERNAL_STARTING_HEADER_IMPLEMENTATION before including
<bits/libc-header-start.h>, to discourage inclusion outside glibc as
requested. __USE_GNU conditions on affected functions are changed to
__GLIBC_USE (LIB_EXT2), while it's added as an additional alternative
on the conditions for functions already enabled for some POSIX
versions.
It would be possible to convert existing __USE_* conditionals to
__GLIBC_USE (with the relevant __GLIBC_USE_* being defined in
<features.h> where __USE_* are presently defined), and so make them
typo-proof (given -Wundef -Werror in glibc builds) because __GLIBC_USE
is used with #if not #ifdef / #if defined.
No attempt is made to enforce the rule about diagnosing different
definitions of __STDC_WANT_LIB_EXT2__ when affected headers are
included; such a diagnostic is incompatible with multiple-include
guards on the affected headers, unless compiler extensions are added
to support it.
As previously noted, glibc does not implement all features from TR
24731-2:2010: the functions aswprintf vaswprintf getwdelim getwline
are not in glibc, although they would be appropriate to add if someone
wished to do so. But I think it makes sense to support the feature
test macro if *any* of the controlled features are present in glibc.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

The nan* functions handle their string argument by constructing a
NAN(...) string on the stack as a VLA and passing it to strtod
functions.
This approach has problems discussed in bug 16961 and bug 16962: the
stack usage is unbounded, and it gives incorrect results in certain
cases where the argument is not a valid n-char-sequence.
The natural fix for both issues is to refactor the NaN payload parsing
out of strtod into a separate function that the nan* functions can
call directly, so that no temporary string needs constructing on the
stack at all. This patch does that refactoring in preparation for
fixing those bugs (but without actually using the new functions from
nan* - which will also require exporting them from libc at version
GLIBC_PRIVATE). This patch is not intended to change any user-visible
behavior, so no tests are added (fixes for the above bugs will of
course add tests for them).
This patch builds on my recent fixes for strtol and strtod issues in
Turkish locales. Given those fixes, the parsing of NaN payloads is
locale-independent; thus, the new functions do not need to take a
locale_t argument.
Tested for x86_64, x86, mips64 and powerpc.

The implementations of strtod and related functions use
locale-specific conversions to lower case when parsing the contents of
a string NAN(n-char-sequence_opt). This has the consequence that
NAN(I) is not treated as being of that form (only the initial NAN part
is accepted). The syntax of n-char-sequence directly maps to the
ASCII letters, digits and underscore as in identifiers, so it is
unambiguous that all ASCII letters must be accepted in all locales.
This patch, relative to a tree with
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-11/msg00258.html> (pending
review) applied and depending on that patch, fixes this problem by
checking directly for ASCII letters. This will have the side effect
of no longer accepting 'İ' (dotted 'I') inside NAN() in Turkish
locales, which seems appropriate (that letter wouldn't have been
interpreted as having any meaning in the NaN payload anyway, as not
acceptable to strtoull).
Tested for x86_64 and x86.

The implementations of strtol and related functions use
locale-specific conversions to upper case before determining whether a
character is a valid letter in the argument. This means that in
Turkish locales such as tr_TR.UTF-8 and tr_TR.ISO-8859-9, "i" is
interpreted as not being a valid number, when if the base passed to
strtol is 19 or more it should be interpreted as the number 18.
ISO C explicitly says "The letters from a (or A) through z (or Z) are
ascribed the values 10 through 35", so clearly intends the standard
ASCII letters (otherwise you wouldn't generally have exactly 26
letters to ascribe such values) (whereas white-space must be
identified according to the locale). In particular, 'i' and 'I' must
be understood to be in that sequence.
This patch makes the code do the case conversions and classification
in the C locale; the user's locale remains used for whitespace testing
(explicitly correct according to ISO C). Note that the way the code
worked, the only non-ASCII letter that would previously have been
accepted would have been the Turkish 'ı' (dotless 'i'), because the
uppercase version of that in Turkish locales is 'I'. This patch means
that will no longer be accepted, which seems appropriate.
Tested for x86_64 and x86.

This patch converts various miscellaneous functions definitions in
glibc, found with grep and not covered by my previous scripted
conversions, from old-style K&R to prototype-style. These changes
were made manually. This is not necessarily exhaustive as formatting
variants may have prevented my grep from finding some such
definitions.
Regarding the changes to files from GMP, they may originally have been
omitted when removing __STDC__ conditionals because of the files
coming from another package, but (a) GMP no longer has __STDC__
conditionals there anyway and (b) we don't try to keep these files
verbatim in sync with GMP (and there are licensing differences), so
making the change to them in glibc seems reasonable.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite - this patch affects files

assertions).
This mostly automatically-generated patch converts 113 function
definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. Following
my other recent such patches, this one deals with the case of function
definitions in files that either contain assertions or where grep
suggested they might contain assertions - and thus where it isn't
possible to use a simple object code comparison as a sanity check on
the correctness of the patch, because line numbers are changed.
A few such automatically-generated changes needed to be supplemented
by manual changes for the result to compile. openat64 had a prototype
declaration with "..." but an old-style definition in
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/dl-openat64.c, and "..." needed adding to the
generated prototype in the definition (I've filed
<https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=68024> for diagnosing
such cases in GCC; the old state was undefined behavior not requiring
a diagnostic, but one seems a good idea). In addition, as Florian has
noted regparm attribute mismatches between declaration and definition
are only diagnosed for prototype definitions, and five functions
needed internal_function added to their definitions (in the case of
__pthread_mutex_cond_lock, via the macro definition of
__pthread_mutex_lock) to compile on i386.
After this patch is in, remaining old-style definitions are probably
most readily fixed manually before we can turn on
-Wold-style-definition for all builds.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite).

This automatically-generated patch converts 703 function definitions
in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style.
This conversion is deliberately simplistic, excluding any tricky cases
as even a patch covering only simple cases is still very large.
Currently excluded are: sysdeps files (to improve test coverage for
the initial patch); files containing assertions (to avoid line number
changes so that generated libraries can be compared); any cases where
the generated function declaration would involve lines over 79
characters and so need to be wrapped; any cases with array parameters
or other cases where parameter declarators don't end with the
parameter name; any other cases that my script didn't parse.
I didn't try to make the ChangeLog generation indicate when function
definitions are conditional; it just lists the functions changed
without regard to that.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped
shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

There is a configure test for -fexceptions. This option was added in
GCC 2.8, so the test is obsolete - and indeed plenty of code is using
-fexceptions directly. This patch removes the configure test and
makes all uses of $(exceptions) use -fexceptions directly.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed shared
libraries are unchanged by the patch).

The optimization introduced in commit
f13c2a8dff2329c6692a80176262ceaaf8a6f74e, causes regressions in
sorting for languages that have digraphs that change sort order, like
cs_CZ which sorts ch between h and i.
My analysis shows the fast-forwarding optimization in STRCOLL advances
through a digraph while possibly stopping in the middle which results
in a subsequent skipping of the digraph and incorrect sorting. The
optimization is incorrect as implemented and because of that I'm
removing it for 2.23, and I will also commit this fix for 2.22 where
it was originally introduced.
This patch reverts the optimization, introduces a new bug-strcoll2.c
regression test that tests both cs_CZ.UTF-8 and da_DK.ISO-8859-1 and
ensures they sort one digraph each correctly. The optimization can't be
applied without regressing this test.
Checked on x86_64, bug-strcoll2.c fails without this patch and passes
after. This will also get a fix on 2.22 which has the same bug.

It was noted in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-09/msg00305.html> that the
bits/*.h naming scheme should only be used for installed headers.
This patch renames bits/libc-lock.h to plain libc-lock.h and
bits/libc-lockP.h to plain libc-lockP.h to follow that convention.
Note that I don't know where libc-lockP.h comes from for Hurd (the
Hurd libc-lock.h includes libc-lockP.h, but the only libc-lockP.h in
the glibc source tree is for NPTL) - some unmerged patch? - but I
updated the #include in the Hurd libc-lock.h anyway.
Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared
libraries are unchanged by the patch).
